Folk rock band from Los Angeles, formed in 1964 by Jim McGuinn (who changed his name to Roger McGuinn), David Crosby and Gene Clark. They started out as a trio, the Jet Set, and recorded a demo.arke and bluegrass mandolinist Chris Hillman joined the band. Hillman switched to the bass. They cut a demo of Dylan’s “ Mr. Tambourine Man” which became their first big hit single.
The Byrds were seen as the American Beatles and George Harrison was a big fan.
They released their debut album, “ Mr. Tambourine Man” in 1965. Their second hitsingle was Pete Seeger’s “ Turn! Turn! Turn!”.
They mixed psychedelic music with folk on their third single “ Eight Miles High”. Gene Clark left the band after that record because of his fear of flying.
The band continued as a quartet and released their third album “ 5D (Fifth Dimension)”.
David Crosby left the band in 1967 because he couldn’t get along with McGuinn and Hillman and so did Michael Clarke.
McGuinn and Hillman rebuilt the band, adding Gram pasons to play keyboards and Kevin Kelly on drums . his line-up recorded the country influenced album “ Sweetheart Of The Rodeo” in 1968. Parsons left the band in 1968 and so did Chris Hillman. They both formed the Flying Burrito Brothers.
McGuinn kept the band going for several years with different line-ups.
The original Byrds got together again for a one-ff reunion album in 1973.
All Byrds members persued solo careers after the band fell apart.
Gene Clark died in 1991 and Michael Clarke died in 1993.
